The fantastic debut of Gilgamesh – a super-tight band with ties to other prog acts of the British scene of the 70s – and who here emerge with a vibe that's kind of a later extension of the Canterbury mode! The tracks vary in style and length, and are graced by superb musicianship throughout – a lineup that features Phil Lee on guitars, Jeff Clyne on bass, and Michael Travis.

Sep 19,  · Gilgamesh shares qualities with these groups, such as extended and obtuse yet warm instrumental passages. The fact that Gowen had auditioned for one of the most notable Canterbury bands, Hatfield and The North, reinforces the Canterbury connection. Ultimately, the liner notes tell the story of Gilgamesh as a frustrating one/5(9).

Sep 30,  · Gilgamesh is one of the more inaccessible group in the Canterbury genre, and of their two historic albums, I can say without any shame I am not a fan of those two. So when I found this one at the library, I was not expecting some rather adventurously obtuse jazz-rock bordering on the free jazz and RIO, but this was actually quite a surprise.
