Roscoe is great and the updated liner notes are great, but I gave it only four out of five because it is NOT an exact reissue of the Lp of the same name (missing the cut "Charles Guiteau") although it does contain additional material not on the original Lp. The sound quality is improved over the Lp/5(26).

The legendary Roscoe Holcomb performs 21 powerful songs shaped by the hard times and conflict between old and new that marked his life in the Kentucky mountains. A hard-hitting singer and banjo-player, he also performs unaccompanied ballads, banjo and harmonica solos, and with a guitar. These.

But The High Lonesome Sound was named for Roscoe Holcomb’s voice: a wavering, blues-infused tenor that stretched each line to its rhythmical limits, sometimes more.

Holcomb is a big favorite among musicians and folklorists -- Bob Dylan, for one, is a big fan -- yet it must be said that this is probably too authentic for most listeners to play for pleasure. It's straight from the bone, with high, at times harsh vocals that make no concession to popular clichés to Price: $

Cohen visited Holcomb frequently over the next three decades, and made many photographs, films and records of his music.
